SEO Optimization 101

Going against my Search Engine Optimization advice? Read on

If you have read any of my articles, you know I am against SEO. Why? Better things can be done with your time. But there are several easy things you can do to improve your chances on a higher ranking. These ideas have been around for a while and to me are some rules to play by

Rule #1 – Add a H1 tag
It has been almost proven that putting your main phrase or keyword towards the top of your main page with an H1 tag around it will help your search engine ranking. It brings emphasis to this by of course enlarging the text on the page.

Rule #2 – Add a H2 tag
The H2 tag is your second keyword or phrase. It is best to not try to optimize a page for many types of phrases. Add your next most popular keyword or phrase you are targeting inside an H2 tag on the page.

Rule #3 – Add alt= text to each image
Every image on your page should have an alt tag. This is designed for when you do not see the image and also shows on a rollover. It seems search engines like this and it is most important to vary the text. Do NOT put the same phrase for each image.

Rule #4 – Get linked
There have been many debates on the importance and penalties for link exchanges. Sometimes people say it hurts your ranking to exchange links and sometimes not. Buying links on popular or high pagerank websites is also hotly debated. It seems the best advice is to get a nice large or popular site to link to you with no link back. This indicates to search engines that there is no trading or purchasing of links. The search engines seem to feel the link is genuine for their users and that they are recommending it without reward of a link back. As far as buying links, it may be risky to do such a thing. I would not put it past some search engines to realize that people are selling links. They are not popular for being slouches when weeding out link farms and sites selling links. You may be surprised how much they can detect.

Rule #5 – Add quality content and limit outbound links
There is nothing better than quality content. This is by far the best thing you can do for your website. New and fresh content is the thing all search engines want. Old stale website are not received well and do not last in search engine rankings. Users will not like this either. Also limit the number of outbound links that you have off your site. This drains your page in certain circumstances. More to come.. check back for more articles soon.
